German Chamomile, (Matricaria recutita), is an annual herb.  It looks similar to a daisy with small white petals circled around a yellow center.   It has a strong aroma and blooms in the early to mid summer months.   It is found in North America and other parts of the world.  The word chamomile means earth apple on the ground. It has a sweet, apple, scent.  It grows close to the ground in the wild or as borders in herb gardens.

German Chamomile and Roman Chamomile, (Chamaemelum nobile), come from different species of plants.  Roman Chamomile is a perennial herb.  Both herbs look very similar in appearance and are used, interchangeably, to treat similar conditions.

Chamomile is available in different forms:  dried flower heads, tea, capsules, cream, ointment and oil.   German Chamomile is most commonly used, medicinally.  Chamomile can be blended with other herbs to increase its effectiveness.  For instance, combining it with peppermint can help relieve indigestion.  Chamomile is anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-microbial, anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory.  It has antioxidants benefits.

CAUTIONS!  Chamomile may interact with other herbs, supplements or medicines.  One example, it may increase the risk of bleeding when taken with blood thinners. Pregnant women should avoid chamomile, due to the risk of miscarriage.   It may cause drowsiness.  Drinking large amounts of chamomile tea can induce vomiting.  It can aggravate asthma or allergies.  Keep away from eyes.  German Chamomile is generally safe to use.   In some instances, you may want to seek the advice of your health care provider, before using.

Chamomile is well-known for its use in tea.  Chamomile tea is an antioxidant drink with a golden color and delicious fruity flavor.  There are numerous chamomile tea benefits for the body, skin and hair!   Drink the tea or just use the chamomile tea bags to reduce under eye puffiness and dark circles.  Chamomile tea can be used in a variety of ways.
